Don’t Die

A red and black background with an arrow in the middle.

Suicide…… so so sad … avoidable and preventable.  Clearly a result of untreated psychiatric / medical illness. The painful and lingering feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness combined with chronic feelings of emptiness, a void that cannot be filled…feeling defeated and rejected, ”no one can help me; no one can understand me” … The desperation that one feels stuck with no way out!

The way out from this painful darkness is by recognizing that we developed an illness and need professional assistance to help us to feel better.  We cannot assume it’s not treatable or assume we know how to treat it.  Many of us think we know what we don’t know.  Depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and others are part of an important medical discipline, which is Psychiatry.

We must accept that Psychiatry is part of medicine and psychiatric symptoms can be successfully treated as in any other discipline in medicine.  We seek medical treatment when we suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol, because if we don’t, we can die. We take meds, exercise and adjust our diet. Similarly, we can die from untreated psychiatric illness, such as suicide.

We often forget that the brain is an organ that influences not only how we feel, but how our body functions.  A psychiatric condition is a medical condition that can be successfully treated and help us to feel ourselves again, notice a beautiful spring day … be present.
