What Is Psychiatric Medication Management?

Medication management is a collaborative process that involves assessing your symptoms, reviewing past treatments, prescribing (when appropriate), and adjusting medication as your needs evolve. It’s not a quick prescription—it’s a thoughtful, ongoing relationship that centers your goals and well-being.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Major Depression & Dysthymia
  • Bipolar Spectrum Disorders
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders (e.g., PTSD)
  • Sleep disturbance related to mood or anxiety

What to Expect

  1. Initial evaluation (60 min): symptoms, history, medical background, and what’s worked or not worked in the past.
  2. Treatment plan built together—may include medications, therapy integration, or lifestyle supports (e.g., sleep, rhythm, light exposure).
  3. Ongoing follow-ups (20–45 min): monitor effectiveness, side effects, and update prescriptions as needed.

Our Approach

  • Personalized care: no “one-size-fits-all” plans—every decision is based on your specific needs and preferences.
  • Evidence-informed: we use data, research, and clinical experience—not trends or quick fixes.
  • Therapy-friendly: many patients also see a therapist, and we coordinate when appropriate.
  • Medication only when it helps: we don’t overprescribe—and we don’t avoid medication when it may bring relief.

Common Questions About Medications

Do I have to take medication forever?

Not necessarily. Some people benefit from long-term treatment, while others may taper once they feel stable. We review this regularly and always include you in the decision.

Can I start without medication?

Yes. If you’d prefer to start with evaluation or therapy discussion only, we’ll respect that. Medication is one tool—never the only one.

Are you available for second opinions?

Yes. If you’re unsure about a current treatment plan or want another perspective, we offer medication consultations and second opinions.

Can this be done by Telehealth?

Yes. Medication management can be done via secure video for patients located in New York State. See our Telepsychiatry page for details.
